Stages of Infant Attachment

P6170This week’s FREE tool of the week is a handy wheel diagram illustrating the stages of infant attachment to caregivers. It comes from CEC’s Addressing Challenging Behaviors and Mental Health Issues in Early Childhood. Attachment is a natural process that can be disrupted by events such as trauma and neglect. Healthy attachment is formed during the first three years of life, but specific periods are key to its formation. This diagram highlights those periods for a quick reference on what behavioral shifts to expect and when. If you’re an educator or caregiver of young children, this is one for the office bulletin board!

For more information on the social emotional development of infants and toddlers and the challenging behaviors that can arise during early childhood, see CEC’s Addressing Challenging Behaviors.
